Athonite Style Incense
What is Athonite style incense and how is it made? In the tradition of Mt. Athos (The Holy Mountain), it begins with pure frankincense tears, imported botanical extracts, & fragrant wood resins. Pure frankincense resin is ground into a fine powder, which is then saturated with rich fragrant oil. Kneading this mixture by hand, it is brought to a dough-like consistency. It is then time for the rolling and cutting of the incense. The monks begin their work with the prayer, “Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, have mercy on us; and continue with the Jesus Prayer, taking turns reciting “Lord Jesus Christ Son of God have mercy on me” as they roll and cut the incense. The grains of incense now covered with the finest fire-purified clay powder to mitigate the stickiness of the mixture, are cured for a minimum of 30 days. This cured incense, rich in fragrance is then prayerfully prepared and packaged. This incense would make an excellent gift, for anyone wanting to experience some of the finest incense anywhere!

OUT OF STOCK . . . Holy Cross Hermitage no longer makes this fragrance. Our apologies.
Porphyry Incense is a Byzantine style fragrance that is complex and sweet. Its lofty aroma is reminiscent of the majesty of the ancient "purple-clad" palaces and basilicas of the glorious Byzantine Emperors. Our Porphyry incense is filled with a complex medley of citrus notes of bergamot, lemon and orange, a mossy note of Oakmoss, and woody and floral notes of Orange Blossom and Jasmine. The sweet complexity of this majestic incense is fit only for the King of Kings!
No longer being made at Holy Cross Hermitage . . . our apologies. Please try our Holy Apostles fragrance if you enjoy the aroma of sandalwood.
Treasured as an incense ingredient for thousands of years, sandalwood is a sweet, earthy and woody aroma that many of our customers have been asking for. If you like Frankincense or Myrrh, you are sure to love our Sandalwood fragrance.
Sunrise of the East
Because Stars of the Orient is no longer available, we thought it would be good to offer another fragrance to honor our Lord & Holy Orthodoxy in the East. A beautiful mixture of three of our incenses: lilac (from Mt. Athos), orange & myrrh . . .floral/citrus/earthy. VERY nice, we think. :)
In memory of the 26 monks martyred in 1275 at the Zographou Monastery on the Holy Mountain, we introduce this new incense blend in their honor! A mixture of myrrh along with citrus makes for a very fragrant aroma. MEMORY ETERNAL!
