Psalters for Home and Church

Orthodox Psalter Psalms 3 CD Set

A beautiful 3 audio CD set of The Psalter from our friends at the Hermitage of the Holy Cross (2011).  They have recorded the reading of the Psalter in English on three compact discs (214 minutes). The text of the Psalms was translated by Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Brookline, MA, from the 1821 Moscow edition of the Greek Septuagint Psalter, the most trusted and reliable of all extant printings of the the traditional Greek text of Orthodox Church. The Psalms are read in a manner common to Orthodox prayer services: a simple intonation minimizing any possibility of subjective interpretation. The arrangement of the Psalms into tracks on this disc also follows the liturgical practice of the Orthodox Church, where the whole Psalter is divided into twenty Kathismata and each Kathisma into three stases. Each stasis is concluded with a Trinitarian Doxology. The Psalter is read by a monk of the Hermitage of the Holy Cross. The packaging is full-color, with the three discs attached to a tri-fold “digi-pak”, all of which slides into a sturdy slipcover. Our hope is that those who purchase this recording will reap years of spiritual benefit from the use of the recording, which is an excellent accompaniment on a daily commute, road trip, or a day at work (from the Hermitage of the Holy Cross).

Disc I Kathisma I-VII

Disc II Kathisma VIII-XIV

Disc III Kathisma XV-XX

3 CD Package :  $25.00

A Psalter for Prayer

A Psalter for Prayer is the first major English edition to include all the prayers needed to read the Psalter at home according to an Orthodox tradition that reaches back to the time of the desert fathers, known popularly as the 'cell rule'. In addition, the contents include many texts, traditionally printed in Orthodox Psalters, that are not easily found in English, such as the Rite for Singing the Twelve Psalms, directions for reading the Psalter for the Departed and much more.

The Psalms and Nine Biblical Canticles have been adapted from the classic Miles Coverdale translation of the Book of Psalms and the King James Version of the Bible. The text has been carefully edited to agree with the original Greek of the Septuagint, as well as to the Latin and Church Slavonic translations, and has been approved for use within the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.

A beautiful book (weighs nearly 3 lbs!), printed in large print on acid-free paper, with rubrics in red, this book is sturdily bound to withstand regular use. It is further enhanced by the two gold marker ribbons. 368 pgs, 11 x 8.5 hardcover, 2011.

Blue Hardcover:  $45.00

The Psalter - According to the Seventy
From the monks of Holy Transfiguration Monastery comes the Psalter According to the Seventy. The Psalms as organized for liturgical use in the Byzantine rite, together with the biblical odes for the canon of Matins. Beautifully hardbound and printed. Traditional English. The first major liturgical publication from Holy Transfiguration Monastery, The Psalter contains an English translation drawn from the major translations of the Septuagint Psalter available at the time, and this new translation has a wonderful style of language, appropriately formal but not too much so, and a linguistic structure which allows the text to flow in poetic style. The Psalms are presented in their respective Kathismas, and the entire Nine Odes are included in the text. Includes tables listing the Order of Reading of the Psalms throughout the year.

Printed on seventy pound, acid-free paper. 300 pages.

Blue Clothbound 300 pgs. :  $23.00

Additionally, the revision brings these books in line with Revised Liturgical English (RLE), developed here at St Tikhon's Seminary and Monastery as a dignified English setting for the services that is both easy to understand yet not a concession to contemporary English as has been tried in earlier translations. RLE is used in all our publications of service books and prayer books from at least 2008 onward. For those linguistically inclined, this means that the language herein is consistent with our Apostol, our Morning and Evening prayer books, and the Great Book of Needs. Also included are Prayers Before and After Communion, Special Hymns, Verses and Antiphons for the Festal and Paschal Cycle, Dismissals for the Year, and a Monthly Calendar of Saints. The Royal Hours: Christmas, Theophany, Pascha
The "Royal Hours" are beautiful parts of the Orthodox preparation for the three great Baptismal feasts of the Church: Christmas, Theophany and Pascha. They are meditative services, allowing us to savor the great themes and highlights of each feast. Two of the regular psalms of each hour are replaced with those that prophesy the events in the incarnate life of Christ, and appropriate stikhera, Old Testament prophesies and Epistle and Gospel readings are added.

This book provides easy access to these beautiful prayers, hymns and texts in English without the need for multiple books and sheets of paper. In this format, they can easily be celebrated even if only the Lord's quorum of "two or three are gathered together."

Each of the hours has been presented independently, so that if time and circumstances are lacking to do all four on a given vigil day, perhaps at least one can be managed. General rubrics are given, along with instructions for grouping the hours in traditional practice.

The book contains full texts and rubrics for celebration with a priest. However, for those in mission parishes without a regular priest and for those living far from their parishes and unable to attend every service, these hours are uniquely suited to being read, chanted and sung as readers' services.

The texts, including the Scriptural Psalms taken from the Holy Myrrhbearer’s Monastery’s own Kathisma Psalter, and in the style of their popular "Manual" series, are revised in accordance with the Greek Septuagint translation. 178 pgs 6" x 8 1/2" format, wire bound.
