Russian Masterwork Icon Series

INTRODUCING
.. .a new line of exquisitely crafted Russian icons.
The Russian Masterwork Icon Series represents a breakthrough in icon-crafting, utilizing the latest silk-screen technology. When people see these icons for the first time, their typical reaction is "What beautiful hand-painted icon!"

The unique creative process behind these icons was developed by one of Russia's premier icon studios. Seeing the desire of pious Orthodox Christians for high-quality hand-painted icons in the traditional canonical style, and knowing that the demand for such icons could never be met by the small number of trained iconographers, a master iconographer developed this new technique, whereby some of the most beloved ancient types are applied using dozens of different layers of mineral paint to a solid wood board, fully one inch thick with kovcheg. Metallic foil is applied and hand-worked. The icon is then embellished with halos and lettering, and trimmed in deep red.
The result is an exquisite image with the real living character of a hand-painted icon, one that any praying person would be honored to have in their icon corner.

Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon
St. Panteleimon is venerated in the Orthodox Church as a mighty saint, a great healer, and the protector of soldiers. This aspect of his veneration is derived from his first name Pantoleon, which means "a lion in everything". His second name Panteleimon given him at Baptism which means "all-merciful" is manifest in the veneration of the martyr as a healer. The connection between these two aspects of the saint is readily apparent in that soldiers receiving wounds more frequently than others are more in need of a physician-healer. Christians waging spiritual warfare also have recourse to this saint asking him to heal their spiritual wounds. The Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon is invoked in the Mystery of Anointing the Sick at the Blessing of Water and in the Prayers for the Sick. His feast is celebrated on July 27th (O.S.).

Jesus Christ, The Lord Over All
Our Great God and Saviour Jesus Christ is depicted with His right hand raised in blessing. This is Christ as the Lord of All (Pantocrator) at the end of the ages. His nimbus bears within it a Cross with the words "HE WHO IS." This is a title for God and signifies Christ's deity. His cloak is blue to symbolize His humanity which He put on in His Incarnation and His tunic is red to represent His divinity that He always had from eternity.

And behold I come quickly; and my reward is with me to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end the first and the last.

St. Alexander of Svir
In 1487, St. Alexander, then a monk of the Valaam Monastery, settled between Roschinsky and Holy lakes, 20 km to the east from Lake Ladoga and 6 km from the Svir River. During his life in the woods, he had a vision of the Holy Trinity who ordered him to build two oaken chapels dedicated to the Trinity and the Savior's Transfiguration. These churches gave birth to Alexander of Svir Monastery. The Church Synod of 1547 canonized Alexander of Svir, and the new saint became venerated throughout Russian lands. One of the chapels of the famous Saint Basil's Cathedral on Red Square, for instance, was consecrated to him. After 500 years his holy relics, once thought to be lost to fire at the hands of the Bolsheviks, are still incorrupt and now reside again in his newly-restored monastery. His feast is celebrated on August 30th (O.S.).

St. Sergius of Radonezh
St. Sergius, the founder of the Holy Trinity Lavra, was born to Rostov boyars. From his childhood he grew accustomed to solitude and sought his salvation through prayer, fasting and work. After his parents' death he decided to leave for the desert. He started his hermitage in a clearing surrounded by thick forest on a low hill, building cells and a small church dedicated to the Lifegiving Trinity. Having become Abbot of the monastery, St. Sergius did not change anything in his life and continued to work for all. He remembered the words of Christ, "The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve" (Mt. 20:28). Not only was he a father but also a servant to all those who came to him giving an example of humility and work. In his lifetime already he was revered as a saint. His feast is celebrated on September 25th (O.S.).

The Most Holy Trinity
This icon is sometimes called the Old Testament Trinity. It depicts the appearance to Abraham of three angels, understood by the Church as a representation of the Holy Trinity. Since the Trinity Itself cannot be directly depicted, the Church confesses and venerates this most exalted doctrine by the depiction of Abraham's vision. The early Fathers understood one of the Angels to be Christ Himself, and thus the second Angel is shown wearing the garments of Christ.

The Mother of God Chernigov
While Lazar Baranovich was Archbishop of Chernigov and Zosima was Abbot of the Ilinsk Monastery, tears poured forth from this icon from the 16th to the 24th of April, 1662. In that same year, the Tatars attacked Chernigov and devastated all of the surrounding villages. However, the monks of the monastery knew nothing of the imminent danger. In the night, they received the news. After rushing to the church, and earnestly, tearfully, praying to their Heavenly Intercessor, they hid in a cave. At midnight the Tatars broke into the monastery and looted the church, but the miraculous icon and all of its precious decorations remained untouched. An unseen power did not permit the barbarians to touch the Holy Icon. That same unseen force kept them from entering the cave where the monks were hiding. Suddenly, terrified by a vision, the barbarians fled. Her feast is celebrated on April 16th (O.S.).

The Mother of God Enthroned
The Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary here appears as the Queen of All. She is enthroned who once enthroned Christ God in her womb, and on her lap as a small child. This icon is based on the original Pantanassa or Queen of All" icon. It is a copy of the 17th-century miraculous icon treasured in the Athonite Monastery of Vatopedi. Through the grace of this icon there were so many healings of cancer that a copy of it was requested and blessed for those suffering in Russia where many miracles occurred.

In the year 1991 many reprints of the icon "Queen of All" were given as a blessing to the Russian children who had cancer. Doctors at the Cancer Center were the witnesses of many miracles of healing that happened afterwards. Upon receiving the icon one boy who was dying from cancer unexpectedly began to feel better. He asked that he be allowed to take the icon home and shortly afterwards recovered fully.

The Mother of God Kazan
The Mother of God of Kazan is one of the most venerated holy icons in the Russian Orthodox Church. The icon was discovered on July 8, 1579, underground in the city of Kazan, after the Theotokos herself revealed its location to a little girl. The icon was credited by the Russian commanders - Dmitry Pozharsky and Mikhail Kutozov - with helping the country to repel the Polish invasion of 1612, the Swedish invasion of 1709, and Napoleon's invasion of 1812. The original icon was kept in one of the monasteries of Kazan, whereas its ancient and venerated copies have been displayed at the Kazan Cathedrals of Moscow, Yaroslavl, and St. Petersburg. Her feast is celebrated on July 8th and October 22nd (O.S.).

The Mother of God Vladimir
The Mother of God of Vladimir is one of the most universally beloved Orthodox icons. Through this icon, the Mother of God revealed her Holy Protection over the Russian land. The original icon is displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.

Patriarch Luke Chrysoberges of Constantinople sent the newly made icon as a gift to Grand Duke Yury Dolgoruky of Kiev in about 1131. One of the most exquisite icons ever created, the icon of the Theotokos of Vladimir is sometimes described as exhibiting universal feelings of motherly love and anxiety for her child. The venerated image was used in coronations of tsars, elections of patriarchs, and other important ceremonies of state. Her feast is celebrated on June 3rd (O.S.).
